Saturday, July 25th...Later

Queen's Final results as follows:

1st place:  Nick Tremlett - 298.44
2nd place:  John Warburton - 297.34
3rd place:  David Luckman - 296.37
4th place:  Jim Paton - 295.38

Stan Frost shot a very respectable 291.33 to place 25th and Emmanuel Gauvin shot a 290.30 to place 41st.

As per usual, we are looking forward to hosting the Queen's prize winner at the Macdonald Stewart Pavilion at around 9 pm.  Nick will have an opportunity to fire the cannon followed by Jim Paton (winner of the Daily Mail), Stan Frost (winner of the Freddy Payne Memorial), Terry Perkins (winner of the F-Class Restricted St. George's), a combination of the Canadian F-Class shooters (to recognize their many victories this past week) and Cdt Joel Martin (winner of the Chairman's prize - Tyro).  Finally, we had Matthias (I apologize for not knowing his Surname), representing RUAG ammunition fire the cannon as a means of thanks for the excellent ammunition that his company provided for the Imperial Meeting.

I'll try to write again tomorrow....depending on how tonight goes of course.

Saturday, July 25th

As promised, here is a recap of how our team placed in the second stage of the St. George's and the Queen's.  In the St. George's II, we had 3 people advance to the final stage:  Emmanuel Gauvin, Jim Paton and Serge Bissonnette.  The cut-off score was 148.19.  Steven Spinney just missed out with a 148.18.

As everyone was in prep time for the Queen's II, a torrential rain storm came across Century.  Firing was delayed for 30 minutes as we waited for the storm to pass over.  After we started the match at 300 yards, the weather remained clear with large amounts of sunshine...about the first time we've seen the sun all week.

When the dust settled, we had 3 team members advance to the final stage:  Jim Paton (149.22), Stan Frost (147.19) and Emmanuel Gauvin (147.18).  The cut-off this year was 146.21.  Antony Ringer won the Silver medal with a 150.23 and there were a total of 8 150's going into the final this afternoon.

Prior to the Mackinnon match, the final for the St. George's was fired.  J.A. Anderson from the NRA won with a score of 150.24.  Serge Bissonnette placed 7th with a score of 149.23

This morning, we just completed the Mackinnon match.  The wind conditions were tricky, running between 1 and 6 minutes left at 900 yards and 1 and 10 minutes left at 1000 yards.  Final results as follows:

England:  1163.125
Scotland:  1140.111

Canada:  1122.84
Guernsey:  1118.91
Wales:  1115.99

I'll post another blog once the Queen's Final is over.  Hopefully, I'll have some good news for Canada.

Friday, July 24th

The day started with the Kolapore match.  While the weather looked threatening at the start of the match, we kept, for the most part, dry.  This year, the Kolapore was shot against Great Britain, Jersey, Guernsey, and Kenya.

At 300 yards, we enjoyed a lot of success but there were a couple of interesting sighters that kept Stan's hair grey.  We ended up with a 394.51, which put us 4 points behind Great Britain and, I believe, 2 points behind Jersey, level with Guernsey.

At 500 yards, we struggled a little bit to finish on 386.37.  Great Britain shot 397 to extend their lead.  Finally, at 600 yards, we recovered a tad but finished with a 391.53, giving a final score of 1171.141.  Final results were as follows:

Great Britain:  1193.169
Guernsey:  1183.143
Jersey:  1180.148
Canada:  1171.141
Kenya:  1164.118

Our team breakdown was as follows:

Coach:  Westlake
Spinney:    50.8  49.5  47.4  146.17
Gauvin:     49.6  49.6  50.8  148.20
Bowman:  49.6  50.4  49.7  148.17
Marion:     50.6  49.6  49.6  148.18

Coach:  Frost
Bissonnette:  50.6  46.3  49.6  145.15
Carlton:         48.4  47.0  48.6  143.10
Dugas:           48.8  48.6  49.8  145.22
Paton:            50.7  48.7  50.8  148.22

I'll write more later tonight when the final scores are tabulated for the St. George's II and the Queen's II.

Thursday, July 23rd

Today marked the end of the Grand Aggregate with the firing of the Prince of Wales match and the Overseas match.  More on the Overseas in a bit but first, here is how Canadians placed in the Grand Aggregate:

Emmanuel Gauvin finished with a 75.9 in the Prince of Wales to move him up to 39th place in the Grand.  Emmanuel had a very steady week and certainly deserved his ranking as top Canadian.  Other Canadians in the top 200 are as follows:

Stan Frost - 79th place
Shannon Carlton - 97th place (also the winner of the Gerry Ouellette award as the top Canadian Under 25 in the Grand)
Jim Paton - 110th place
Serge Bissonnette - 134th place
Peter Westlake - 169th place

A special mention for Cadet Renee Paquette from the Cadet NRT who placed 153rd in the Grand.

Now, on to the Overseas Team match.  This year, we competed against Jersey, Guernsey and Kenya.  After 300 yards, we were 10 points behind Jersey, in large part due to a cross-fire.  At 500 yards, we had yet another cross-fire to fall a little bit further behind.  Finally, not to be outdone, we had our 3rd cross-fire at 600 yards and ended up 17 points behind both Guernsey and Jersey.  Full results as follows:

Guernsey:  1221.131
Jersey:  1221.127
Canada:  1204.136
Kenya:  1194.89

Our top scorer today was Jim Paton with a 104.14.

So while today was a little disappointing, we are re-focussing our efforts for the Kolapore tomorrow morning.  I look forward to better news in tomorrow's post as well as details from the St. George's II and Queen's II.

Wednesday, July 22nd, Queen's I

Today was Queen's I day.  The conditions were somewhat tricky with gusting winds at times and quick changes.  The cutoff was 101.7 and we had the following team members qualify for Stage II:

Bowman
Westlake
Gauvin
Dugas
Frost
Paton
Carlton
Bissonnette

The Conan Doyle was also fired today.  Shannon Carlton was the highest Canadian with a 50.4.  I'll update where that placed her tomorrow.  In addition, I'll provide an update as to where Team members are currently placed for the Grand.  One shoot left to complete the Grand Aggregate, the Prince of Wales.  Also on tap for tomorrow; the Overseas team match.

Quick notes on the Tour up until this point

ust a few notes to bring everyone up to speed on our tour thus far.  We ended up with 15 people on the team, including the Commandant and Adjutant so needless to say, everyone has had to step up their efforts for all team activities.  Thus far, I have been extremely proud of everyone's cooperation and teamwork.  It certainly has made mine and Jacques' lives a lot easier.

Now, some specific highlights:

-  On Friday, July 10th, we competed in our annual match with the North London Rifle Club.  It was a good match and gave a number of our shooters an opportunity to get long range zeros with the new RUAG ammunition.  Due to our reduced numbers, the match was a 6-man match.  We shot 581.63 to finish second to the NLRC team, who shot 591.61.  Our top scorer was Jim Paton who fired a 100.17, the top score in the match.  The dinner hosted by the NLRC that evening was wonderful as always.

- On Tuesday, July 14th, we competed in the British Commonweatlth Rifle Club team match.  This match also gave an opportunity for some of the guys to get some zeros (this time at short range).  We shot 1155.123 on a Kolapore course of fire.  I can't remember where this placed us but it was a good training opportunity.  The barbeque afterwards hosted by the BCRC was excellent as well.

- On Wednesday, July 15th, we entered 1 team into the RAF invitational match.  We placed 3rd overall in the match with a score of 1134 (ATRC shot 1146 and Jersey fired 1136).  Our final 2 team members arrived this day as well (Gary B0wman and Roger Mullin).

- On Thursday, July 16th, our annual match with the Barbarians took place.  Each team was allowed 10 firers and the top 8 scores counted for the match.  We were victorious this day with a score of 764.69.  The Barbarians shot 754.70 and Jersey (who fired alongside) shot 749.59.  We also had our team photo done today as well as our team barbeque.

- On Friday, July 17th, the warm-up matches started signifying the start of the Imperial Meeting for most team members.  I'll provide a brief summary of some of the Team's successes thus far:

- Alain Marion placed 17th in the Admiral Hutton with a 50.6
- Jim Paton placed 28th in the Century with a 99.13 while Peter Westlake placed 34th with a 99.12
- Jim Paton placed 3rd in the Lovell with a 50.7 while Peter Westlake placed 18th with a 49.6
- While not on the Team, Brian Page, from British Columbia, won the Daily Telegraph with a 75.14.  Emmanuel Gauvin placed 21st with a 75.11
- Jim Paton won the Daily Mail with a 75.12, an outstanding result.  Alain Marion placed 33rd with a 74.9
- Serge Bissonnette placed 7th in the Alexandra with a 50.7.  Stan Frost placed 21st with a 50.6.
- While we didn't have any team members place in the Duke of Cambridge, we did have 2 of our cadets place.  Brandon Garnett placed 10th with a 50.7 while Keith Letendre placed 22nd with a 50.6

A short break from results to tell everyone that we once again hosted the Canadian reception at the Macdonald Stewart Pavilion on Sunday, July 19th.  The building was packed and there was plenty of food and drink for all.  I want to publicly thank all members of the TR team, Bill Flintoft, Dale Rathwell and the F-Class team and Major Rob Thompson and the RCAC National Rifle Team for their support.  Every Canadian contributed to the success of the evening.

Now, more results:
- Steven Spinney shot a fantastic 50.10 followed by a 25.4 in the Times.  He was unfortunately clipped by Andrew Wilde, who shot 50.10, 25.5.  Well done Steven!!  Other 50's were shot by Bissonnette, Paton, Gauvin, Westlake and Bowman.
- In the first stage of the St. George's, the following Team members qualified for the second stage:  Roger Mullin, Emmanuel Gauvin, Jim Paton, Shannon Carlton, Serge Bissonnette, Stan Frost, Gary Bowman and Steven Spinney.

Well, that should bring everyone up to speed a bit.  Stay tuned.

Wednesday, July 22nd

Sorry for the delay in creating this but better late than never.  Today is Queen's I and the Conan Doyle.  The forecast is for clear skies and a high of 21 degrees.  I'll bring everyone up to speed on the Team's activities in the next post and update everyone on how Queen's day went for the Canadian Team.
